Friday Stir Fry - Why?

Why are people so mean? What makes a person want to blow up a bomb or enter a school with guns and intentionally kill and mame people? Every time it happens, I ask this question. I think it goes beyond mental illness. It is a disconnect with people. Somehow they have lost empathy with other humans.

I have to admit there are times I don't like people. Especially in my line of work. But I can't even think of a scenario where I would think of hurting anyone.

I didn't grow up in a world like this. And I feel sorry for the children of today who will not remember a time when these things didn't occur.

We all need to remember the good in people. Like that viral video of Mr Rogers saying "look for the people who are helping."

Hopefully there will always be more of us willing to help than destroy.

  1. I don't understand it either. I know even when I hurt other people with words, I always regret it. How can anyone want to cause so much chaos and pain to others like what happened on Monday? I remember looking at the photo of Jeff Bauman on a news site. I don't think I'll ever forget how ashy-pale and close to death that guy was, much less the faces of the people who died.

As writers, we inflict pain on our characters, but most of it is imagined and it's easy to detach yourself from it because they always come out in the end, but seeing real people grieving is heartbreaking. But the way people rally to help offsets some of that. Bless everyone who helped the victims that day and each day since.

  2. Most people are essentially good, as evidenced by all the people rushing to help. The ones who want to hurt and destroy--well, I can't wrap my brain around that.

  3. So true, Wanda. I do believe that most people are good. Everyone has bad days, but most people wouldn't dream of creating the kind of horror that Boston experienced this week.
