FRIDAY STIR FRY - Better Late Than Never

I know, I know it's been a couple of weeks since my last post. No excuses. Well actually a couple of excuses.

Experienced both ups and downs a couple of weekends ago. It was our much anticipated Ozarks Romance Authors Convention (ORACON). See pictures here. https://www.facebook.com/OzarksRomanceAuthors/photos_stream

As secretary I was in charge of name tags for over a 100 people. So, being the procrastinator I am, I worked most of Friday afternoon on them. I was sorry to miss the book signing of our talented presenters at B&N. But, I wasn't going to miss the fancy dinner at Flame Steak House for our volunteers and speakers.

All was well until I went to the bathroom. Being a bit unsure on my feet, (and no I wasn't drunk), I tripped over the threshold going into the one seater. Landed on my bad knee of course. And, because of my bad knees and, well, my weight, I had a hard time getting up. I wasn't about to ask for help and spoil every one's fun. Anyway, I did something really bad to my foot.

So, the day of the conference, I could barely walk. But, I had to be there because I had all the name tags. Thanks to some awesome pain meds and even more awesome friends Allison Merritt, Lisa Medley and Sara Jordan in particular, who waited on me hand and foot (get it?), I made it through the day. Even managed to pitch my novel to Holly Atkinson with Samhain publishing. And, although my head was a little groggy and I'm sure my pitch wandered off course a bit, she asked to see the manuscript. Yeah!

Several x-rays later, nothing was broken. Still bruised and hurting though. It's been hard to concentrate on anything. Ah, the trials of getting old. But, as they say, it's better than the alternative.

So, let me know - have you ever injured yourself being clumsy?

  1. We were glad to have you with us, even if you were in pain.
I pretty much only injure myself by being clumsy, with the exception of a car wreck one time. I'm well-know for tripping up the stairs (did that just this morning, right after laughing at the dog for doing it), and when I was 14 or 15, someone hit me from behind while going down a small set of stairs. Landed smack on my tailbone and couldn't get up--in front of about 20 juniors waiting to start their history class. That was mortifying.

    1. I fell one time on the stairs at high school where everyone gathered before class. My skirt went up to my waist. Talk about mortified.

  2. Wanda, most of my injuries are self-inflicted. Although it is not on purpose, it is usually because my mind and my body are not in the same place. Hope it is better now. I enjoyed sitting across from you at dinner. You are a very good actress, I didn't even know you were hurt.

  3. Let's see. There was the torn knee ligament when I got my ski tips crossed. A severed lip from another ski accident when I slammed my face into my ski pole. A concussion when I kicked myself in the back of the head with a ski. Gee, I wonder why I don't ski anymore?

I hope your foot heals soon. What a terrible thing to go through. And what a testament to your character that you came through for the conference despite your pain.

  4. When I was 8, I tripped on a rock, hit my knee on another rock when I landed, & split my knee open all the way to the bone. Ended up with 14 stitches & a vivid memory of what an actual joint looks like. In my 20s, I sprained my leg when my ski tips crossed on my first & only ski trip. And just a couple of years ago, I broke my ankle when I got too close to the edge of the road & slipped off while walking my dog...

    1. I can't tell you how many times a rock drove into my shin or knee.

  5. We weren't waiting on you. We were just hanging out. Because you are cool and we like it. :) I hurt myself all the time. Nothing as serious as your fall, but plenty that are embarrassing. My usual trap is stairs. I fall UP them quite often.

  6. A pencil eraser took me down about seven years ago. I still have some knee pain. Junior high students are really messy. I learned my lesson. Always look down!

  7. I love my flip flops and wear them constantly. If I could wear them at work, I would. A few years ago, it was raining and our front porch was really slippery. I slipped and well on my arm. I thought for sure I had broken it. I went to the dr., and lucky for me I didn't break it.

    1. I can't wear flip flops. I trip over the toe part all the time.

  8. Would I ever trip over my own feet? You bet I would. My poor knees had so much red medicine splotched over them when I was a child that it looked like a strange disease. :)

  9. I was throwing a toy for my dog. I pulled my arm back to throw and hit my elbow on the corner of the wall. My elbow hurt for days. Turns out I burst a sack of whatever fluid is in your elbow. After a little therapy it was fine, but now my elbow has an extra bony part that sticks out which most people don't have.
